Hi everyone,
A lot has been said about RateMyRagnarok lately, so here is why this site exists, in my own words.
Why I built it
For a long time I asked RateMyServer and other Ragnarok websites to update their platforms. Those requests were turned down, ignored, or met by admins who run their community as if they alone rule it.
I was also done with:
- the hate that was being spread in their Discord channels;
- fake reviews posted through proxies, VPNs and every other trick you can think of;
- community owners banning people without a reason. I am a server owner myself, and it happened to me too.
I wanted one complete platform where players, server owners, developers and streamers come together in harmony. So I built RateMyRagnarok.
What it is, and what it is not
- Is it perfect? No.
- Is it everyone's style? Certainly not. You can't make everyone happy.
- Do I listen? Yes. I read the comments and try to do what people ask. Does that always work out? No. Are we still learning? Yes.
- Is it used? You can check that yourself on our public activity log: https://ratemyragnarok.com/activity/ . Players look up where items, monsters, maps and quests are, and server owners gain new members.
Fair reviews
Every server owner wants to be at the top with the best reviews, and there is nothing wrong with that, as long as it happens honestly. That is why reviews from VPNs and proxies are refused here, and the forum refuses posts from them too.
I own servers too, and you will never see them advertised here
These are my own projects:
None of them are advertised on RateMyRagnarok, and that is not going to happen. This site is purely for the players, server owners and streamers, including everyone who was treated unfairly elsewhere, me among them. That is the reason I started it.
About the criticism
On 1 September the site was discussed in the #ro_server_discussion channel of another community's Discord. It was said that the site is unusable on Firefox, that it makes a computer run at 100% CPU, that it is "AI slop", and that it is mining crypto. Here are the facts:
- There is no crypto miner, and there never was. Everything the site runs is loaded in your own browser, where anyone can look at it. There are no hidden secrets.
- The high CPU use on some computers was real, and it has been fixed. The site's looping animations kept redrawing even when they were off screen. Since then more than ten performance updates went live, among them:
- animations pause while they are not visible, and the header's glow effects no longer redraw on every screen refresh;
- spinning icons only turn while you can see them;
- pictures are served at the size they are shown;
- scripts and styles are compressed with Brotli, and pages no longer jump around while they load.
- The site should be fast on older computers too. Many of you play on them, so we keep working on that.
- Design is a matter of taste. Tell us what you would change.
If something is still slow or broken for you, in any browser, post it in Suggestions & Feedback or Support with your browser and computer, and we will look at it.
See you on the forum,
Syphon
